It’s So Easy Being Green: 2016 Honda HR-V Is Named ‘2016 Green SUV of the Year™’ by Green Car Journal

March 30th, 2016 by

Honda has a reason to celebrate: the Green Car Journal* has declared the 2016 Honda HR-V—a crossover vehicle released this year—its choice for “Green SUV of the Year™.” The decision, which was announced in January of this year, was based on two factors above all: the 2016 Honda HR-V’s high fuel economy rating of 34mpg* on the highway (2WD CVT), and its design as an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV2 ULEV).

The Award

This is a major recognition, especially coming from an award-winning publication like Green Car Journal. Over twenty-years old, the journal covers developments in the overlapping fields of automobiles, energy, and the environment in order to provide consumers with accurate and up-to-date information about the environmental consequences of their vehicle choices and to promote the sale of clean fuel vehicles. According to editor and publisher Ron Cogan, the award committee at the journal was immediately impressed by the Honda HR-V, whose “active styling, smart features, and fuel economy leadership…gives car buyers an entirely new option in the small SUV category” and “brings true environmental performance to this fast-growing category…” thereby justifying the journal’s decision to name the Honda HR-V its “Green SUV of the Year™.”

A Green Company

In fact, as we at Richards Honda know, the journal probably could have cited even more evidence to support its conclusion. For example, with its optional all-new continuously variable transmission (CVT) and front wheel drive, the 2016 Honda HR-V boasts 28mpg* in the city as well as 35 mpg* on the highway, but it also gets 27mpg* in the city and 32mpg* on the highway when supported by Real Time AWD, and 25mpg* in the city and 34mpg* on the highway with an optional 6-speed manual transmission system and FWD. And more awards may be in sight for Honda: for example, the company plans to release its Honda Clarity Fuel Cell sedan this year, and a plug-in hybrid car by 2018.
